Soviet-era nuclear waste ship sinks in Russia
A Russian ship once used to transport nuclear waste has sunk at a shipyard in northern Russia.
The Severka, was used to transport nuclear waste from 1978 to 1993 and then taken to Polyarny, where warships including nuclear submarines are repaired. An official inquiry found that a torpedo fuel leak caused a massive explosion, sinking the vessel last month. Experts say there was no danger of radioactive contamination.
Arkady Oganyan, General Director, Polarny SRZ-10 Plant, said, "After this incident we took water and air samples to check for radiation. We didn’t detect any. And the latest radiometric tests show that the ship was clean, so it means it was clean when it sank."
